Concern has been raised regarding a number of lenient sentences for incidents of violence against women by their then intimate partners.
In one of these matters the comments by the Judge involved seemed to diminish the seriousness of the violence because it was not a frequent occurrence. In another matter the perpetrator was actually given credit by the Judge for having turned his life around – after being on the run for around 10 years, a breach of the law in itself.
One such matter was the subject of a report by ABC News in Tasmania and featured one of our Senior Solicitors. You can watch it here
We along with a number of organisations have raised, and will continue to raise, our concerns with the lenient sentences handed out for violence against women.
