WOMEN’S LEGAL SERVICE TASMANIA TO FAREWELL SUSAN FAHEY

In October, Women’s Legal Service Tasmania Chief Executive Officer Susan Fahey gave the Board of Management notice that she will leave the position of CEO of the organisation on 21 December 2018.

Susan has been with the service for more than 16 years, leading it for over 11, and leaves an impressive legacy.

“Under Susan’s management Women’s Legal Service Tasmania has grown to a significant and respected presence across Tasmania and beyond,” said Convenor of the Board, Dr Sonia Shimeld.

“Women’s Legal Service Tasmania plays a significant and substantial role in legal service provision, law reform and policy development, professional training, and in the legal profession.

“Women’s Legal Service Tasmania is a now a well-recognised, highly valued and regarded organisation, employing 14 people across the Hobart, Launceston and Burnie offices.  It has influence that is unparalleled in the community legal sector in Tasmania,” said Dr Shimeld.

Susan has decided that it is time for her to take a break before looking for new opportunities.

“I am proud to leave the service in the safe hands of the Women’s Legal Service Tasmania team and feel that now is a great time for someone new to step into the CEO’s role and lead the service through its next phase,” said Ms Fahey.

Ms Fahey notes that her proudest achievement at the helm of Women’s Legal Service Tasmania is having played a part in assisting the countless numbers of women assisted by the service and in the training, development and mentoring of some of the next generation of women lawyers so as to ensure this work continues.

Susan has been recognised for her contribution to the law being awarded the Tasmanian Women Lawyers Achievement Award in 2014, to the organisation in winning the For Purpose and Social Enterprise category of the Telstra Business Women’s Awards in 2015 and was the Tasmanian recipient of the Australian Women in Leadership Awards in 2016.

The Board is now working with Susan and the Women’s Legal Service Tasmania management team to ensure a smooth transition, with recruitment for a new CEO commencing immediately.
