Media Release – Women’s Legal Service Tasmania thanks Premier for his commitment to addressing family violence

Release: Wednesday 16 January, 2020

Women’s Legal Service Tasmania (WLST) recognises Will Hodgman’s commitment to Family Violence through the State Government’s Safe Homes, Safe Families (Action Plan). This action plan comprehensively addressed family violence as a whole of government plan.

This was a massive financial commitment and investment towards addressing family violence in Tasmanian communities. WLST recognise the Premiers leadership in securing the money to fund this comprehensive approach to tackling family violence.

The Chief Executive Officer of WLST, Yvette Cehtel, recognises how his commitment to White Ribbon, and now Our Watch, demonstrates his ongoing commitment to addressing gender inequality as the driver of family violence.

Specifically, WLST have been grateful for his support to provide State Government funding for our Launceston office which has allowed us to offer face-to-face services in Launceston and to focus on providing legal services to women in shelters and hospitals.

We are hopeful that the States Liberal Government’s commitment to addressing gender inequality and family violence will continue to be supported with the Premier’s departure.

We recognise the Premier’s long commitment to Parliament and wish him the best as he retires to prioritise more time with his family.
