We were delighted to support Julie Collins MP today in launching a petition to the Commonwealth Government to reverse its decision to make cuts to our service.
Ms Collins launched the petition on International Women’s Day on behalf of her Federal counterparts.
This annoucement came on top of significant announcements by both the Federal Opposition and the Federal Government for programs to combat family violence, along with calls from the Attorneys-General of all states and territories to the Commonwealth Attorney-General to reverse the cuts to the Community Legal sector and Legal Aid.
WLS CEO and Principal Solicitor Susan Fahey said “With more than two women a week dying at the hands of partners or ex-partners, Australia cannot afford cuts to frontline services such as WLS. Awareness campaigns are great, but if the services are not there for those people who make the decision to seek help then the campaign could be all for nothing”.
The petition can be found here.
